Ninakõrvalurgete is the Estonian term for paranasal sinuses. These are air-filled cavities within the bones of the skull that are connected to the nasal cavity. There are four main pairs of paranasal sinuses: the frontal sinuses, located in the frontal bone above the eyes; the maxillary sinuses, situated in the cheekbones below the eyes; the ethmoid sinuses, a group of small air cells located between the eyes; and the sphenoid sinuses, located deep within the skull behind the ethmoid sinuses.

The primary functions of the paranasal sinuses are not fully understood, but it is believed they help to lighten the weight of the head, contribute to the resonance of the voice, and warm and humidify inhaled air. They also produce mucus, which drains into the nasal cavity and helps to trap and remove foreign particles and pathogens. Inflammation of the paranasal sinuses is known as sinusitis, a common condition that can cause symptoms such as facial pain, pressure, nasal congestion, and a reduced sense of smell. Sinusitis can be caused by infections, allergies, or environmental irritants. Treatment often involves managing the underlying cause and may include nasal sprays, decongestants, or antibiotics if a bacterial infection is present.
