Nickel-61 is a synthetic radionuclide with a half-life of approximately 74 minutes, emitting gamma rays that can be detected by external imaging devices. Its properties make it useful for imaging metabolic processes in tissues, particularly in oncology and cardiology. Unlike more common tracers such as technetium-99m or fluorine-18, Ni-61 is not naturally occurring and must be produced in a cyclotron or nuclear reactor.
