Nielemäkanavana refers to the pharyngeal cavity, a part of the throat in the anatomy of vertebrates. It is located behind the mouth and nasal cavity and above the esophagus and larynx. The pharyngeal cavity is a crucial passageway for both air and food. It is divided into three main sections: the nasopharynx, which is the uppermost part, extending from the base of the skull to the soft palate; the oropharynx, located behind the oral cavity, extending from the soft palate to the hyoid bone; and the laryngopharynx, the lowest part, extending from the hyoid bone to the beginning of the esophagus.

The pharyngeal cavity plays a vital role in several physiological processes. In respiration, it allows air to pass from the nasal cavity or mouth to the larynx and lungs. During swallowing, or deglutition, it facilitates the movement of food from the mouth to the esophagus. The muscles of the pharyngeal wall contract sequentially to propel the food bolus downwards. This intricate process is coordinated by the nervous system to ensure that food is directed towards the esophagus and not into the airway.

Furthermore, the pharyngeal cavity is involved in speech production, acting as a resonating chamber that modifies the sounds produced by the vocal cords. It also houses lymphoid tissue, such as the tonsils and adenoids, which are part of the immune system and help to trap pathogens entering the body through the respiratory or digestive tracts. Infections or inflammation of the pharyngeal cavity, commonly known as pharyngitis or a sore throat, are frequent occurrences.
