Nielaisusta is a Finnish term referring to the act of swallowing. It is a fundamental physiological process involving the coordination of multiple muscles and nerves in the mouth, throat, and esophagus. This complex action allows for the passage of food, liquid, or other substances from the mouth to the stomach.

The process of nielaisusta can be divided into three main phases: the oral preparatory phase, the oral transit phase, and the pharyngeal phase. During the oral preparatory phase, food is chewed and mixed with saliva to form a bolus. In the oral transit phase, the tongue propels the bolus towards the back of the mouth. The pharyngeal phase is involuntary and involves the rapid contraction of muscles in the pharynx to push the bolus down the esophagus. Protective mechanisms, such as the epiglottis closing over the trachea, prevent the bolus from entering the airway.

Difficulties with nielaisusta are known as dysphagia. This can arise from various causes, including neurological disorders, structural abnormalities, or age-related changes. Dysphagia can lead to problems with nutrition, hydration, and an increased risk of aspiration, where food or liquid enters the lungs.
