Neurovälittäjät, also known as neurotransmitters, are chemical messengers that transmit signals across a synapse, the junction between two nerve cells (neurons), or between a neuron and a target cell, such as a muscle cell or gland. These molecules are crucial for virtually all functions of the nervous system, playing a role in everything from thought and emotion to movement and bodily regulation.

When an electrical signal reaches the end of a neuron, called the axon terminal, it triggers the release of neurovälittäjät into the synaptic cleft. These chemicals then diffuse across the cleft and bind to specific receptors on the surface of the next cell. This binding event can either excite or inhibit the target cell, depending on the type of neurovälittäjä and receptor involved.
