Nettosähkövaraus, often translated as net electric charge, refers to the total electric charge possessed by an object or system. In physics, electric charge is a fundamental property of matter that causes it to experience a force when placed in an electromagnetic field. There are two types of electric charge: positive and negative.

Objects are typically composed of atoms, which contain positively charged protons in their nucleus and negatively charged electrons orbiting the nucleus. In a neutral atom, the number of protons and electrons is equal, resulting in a net electric charge of zero. However, atoms can gain or lose electrons, becoming ions. An atom that loses electrons becomes a positively charged ion, and an atom that gains electrons becomes a negatively charged ion.

The net electric charge of an object is the sum of all positive and negative charges it contains. If an object has more positive charges than negative charges, its net electric charge is positive. Conversely, if it has more negative charges than positive charges, its net electric charge is negative. If the number of positive and negative charges is equal, the object is electrically neutral, and its net electric charge is zero. The unit of electric charge in the International System of Units (SI) is the coulomb (C).
