Nestejärviä, a Finnish term, translates to "liquid lakes" or "fluid lakes." It generally refers to bodies of liquid that are found on the surface of celestial bodies other than Earth, particularly planets and moons within our solar system. These lakes are composed of substances that remain liquid at the prevailing temperatures and pressures of their respective locations.

The most well-studied examples of nestejärviä are found on Saturn's moon Titan. These lakes are primarily composed of liquid methane and ethane, rather than water. The surface of Titan is extremely cold, necessitating the use of hydrocarbons for liquid formation. Radar observations from missions like Cassini have revealed vast networks of these liquid bodies, including shorelines and evidence of liquid flow.

While Titan's hydrocarbon lakes are the most prominent, the concept of nestejärviä could also apply to hypothetical subsurface oceans or lakes on other icy moons, such as Europa or Enceladus, where liquid water might exist due to tidal heating. The search for and characterization of such liquid environments is a key objective in astrobiology and planetary science, as liquid water is considered a prerequisite for life as we know it. The study of nestejärviä helps us understand planetary formation, atmospheric processes, and the potential for extraterrestrial life.
