Neopaganism, also known as contemporary paganism or modern paganism, refers to a broad range of spiritual beliefs and practices that are based on or inspired by the ancient pagan religions of Europe. The term "neopaganism" is a broad umbrella that covers many distinct traditions, including Wicca, Druidry, Asatru (or Heathenry), Hellenism, and various forms of folk religion. While these traditions share a common thread of reverence for nature and a connection to ancestral spiritual practices, they differ significantly in their theology, rituals, and organizational structures. Key characteristics often found in neopaganism include a focus on nature, the celebration of seasonal cycles (often through festivals like the solstices and equinoxes), the use of magic or ritual for personal or communal benefit, and an emphasis on personal spiritual experience rather than adherence to strict dogma. Ethics in neopaganism tend to be individualistic, often guided by principles like the Wiccan Rede, which encourages doing what you will, so long as it harms none. Neopagan communities can be highly diverse, ranging from solitary practitioners to organized covens, groves, or kindreds.
