Neocarzinostatin (NCS) is an antitumor antibiotic belonging to the enediyne class of natural products. It was isolated from the actinomycete Streptomyces carzinostaticus var. F-41 in the 1970s. NCS is composed of two distinct parts: a protein component, the apoprotein, and a non-protein chromophore, known as the neocarzinostatin chromophore (NCS-chr). This chromophore is the biologically active moiety responsible for NCS's cytotoxic effects.
