The nasopharynx is the uppermost part of the pharynx, located behind the nasal cavity and above the soft palate. It is one of the three anatomical divisions of the pharynx, the others being the oropharynx and the laryngopharynx. The nasopharynx serves as a passageway for air from the nasal cavity to the lower respiratory tract. It also plays a role in the auditory system, as the opening of the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the pharynx, is located in its lateral wall. The adenoids, also known as the pharyngeal tonsils, are lymphoid tissues found on the posterior wall of the nasopharynx.

The wall of the nasopharynx is composed of a mucous membrane lining a framework of cartilage and bone. The superior and posterior walls are covered by respiratory epithelium, which is ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium. This epithelium helps to trap and move inhaled particles away from the lungs. The lateral walls contain the pharyngeal openings of the Eustachian tubes, which are crucial for equalizing pressure between the middle ear and the nasopharynx. The roof of the nasopharynx is formed by the base of the skull.

Common conditions affecting the nasopharynx include infections, such as nasopharyngitis (the common cold), and inflammation of the adenoids (adenoiditis). Enlarged adenoids can obstruct the nasal airway and interfere with Eustachian tube function, leading to nasal congestion, mouth breathing, and recurrent ear infections. In some cases, tumors can also develop in the nasopharynx. Diagnosis and treatment of nasopharyngeal conditions depend on the specific issue and may involve medical imaging, endoscopy, and appropriate medical or surgical interventions.
