Negatiivit is the Finnish plural noun meaning “negatives.” The term is used in several related but distinct senses, chiefly in photography but also in everyday language to refer to negative aspects of a situation or object.

In photography, negatiivit refers to the image obtained on a light-sensitive medium where the tonal values are inverted relative to the scene. Traditional film photography produces a physical negatiivi (singular) that is used to make positive prints by contact printing or enlargement. Negatiivit come in color and black-and-white varieties and were central to analog photographic workflows.
