Nedbørsdannelse is the process by which water vapor in the atmosphere condenses and falls to the Earth's surface as precipitation. This phenomenon is a crucial part of the Earth's water cycle.

The process begins with evaporation, where water from oceans, lakes, rivers, and even plants turns into invisible water vapor and rises into the atmosphere. As this moist air ascends, it cools. Cooler air can hold less water vapor than warm air. When the air reaches its saturation point, the excess water vapor condenses around tiny particles in the atmosphere, such as dust or salt, forming microscopic water droplets or ice crystals. These clusters are called cloud condensation nuclei.

As more water vapor condenses, these droplets or crystals grow larger. When they become heavy enough to overcome the updrafts supporting them in the atmosphere, they fall to the ground. The form of precipitation depends on the temperature of the atmosphere. If the temperature is above freezing, it falls as rain. If the temperature is below freezing throughout the atmosphere, it falls as snow. If there is a layer of freezing air above a layer of warmer air near the surface, it can fall as sleet or freezing rain. Hail forms in strong thunderstorms where updrafts repeatedly carry ice crystals up and down, allowing them to grow in size.

Nedbørsdannelse is influenced by various atmospheric conditions, including temperature, humidity, air pressure, and wind. These factors collectively determine where, when, and in what form precipitation occurs.
