n-Butyl acrylate (nBA) is an unsaturated ester formed from acrylic acid and n-butanol. Its chemical formula is C7H12O2. It is a colorless to pale liquid at room temperature with a characteristic acrylate odor. It is flammable and volatile, with limited water solubility but good solubility in many organic solvents.

As a vinyl monomer, nBA readily undergoes free-radical polymerization. In industry it is polymerized to form poly(n-butyl acrylate) and copolymers with styrene, acrylonitrile, other acrylates, and related monomers. Polymers based on nBA are soft and flexible; poly(n-butyl acrylate) has a very low glass transition temperature (around −54°C), which makes it useful as a soft segment in copolymers and a component in pressure-sensitive adhesives.

Common applications include coatings, sealants, and flexible finishes, as well as adhesives, particularly pressure-sensitive adhesives used in tapes and labels. n-Butyl acrylate is often used in formulations that require good elasticity and tack.

Production and handling: commercial nBA is produced by esterification of acrylic acid with n-butanol, followed by purification. The monomer is stabilized with inhibitors (for example hydroquinone derivatives) to prevent premature polymerization during storage and transport. Handling requires good ventilation and appropriate protective equipment due to irritation and inhalation hazards.

Safety: exposure can irritate skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract. It should be stored away from heat and oxidizers and kept in tightly closed containers. As with many vinyl monomers, runaway polymerization can occur if impurities or inappropriate conditions are present.
