In computational complexity theory, the concept of approximation refers to solving optimization problems where the goal is to find a solution that is close, but not necessarily exact, to the optimal one. An *ε-approximation* (or *ε-approximate solution*) is a solution whose objective value differs from the optimal value by at most a factor of (1 + ε), where ε is a positive real number. This framework is particularly useful for tackling NP-hard problems, which are generally considered intractable for exact solutions in polynomial time.

A *n-approximation* is a specific case of approximation where the approximation ratio is bounded by a constant factor relative to the input size *n*. In other words, an algorithm provides an *n-approximation* if it guarantees a solution whose objective value is within a multiplicative factor of *n* (or some polynomial in *n*) of the optimal solution. For example, in the context of the *minimum spanning tree* problem, an algorithm might guarantee a solution whose total weight is at most twice the weight of the optimal spanning tree, regardless of the input size. This is considered a constant-factor approximation, as the factor (2 in this case) does not depend on *n*.

The study of approximation algorithms focuses on determining the best possible approximation ratios achievable for various problems. Some problems admit *polynomial-time approximation schemes* (PTAS), where the approximation ratio can be made arbitrarily close to 1 by allowing the algorithm to run in time polynomial in *n* and *1/ε*. Others are *APX-hard*, meaning no polynomial-time approximation scheme exists unless P = NP. The field has practical implications, as approximation algorithms enable efficient solutions to large-scale optimization problems in fields such as operations research, network design, and bioinformatics.
