Nässkiljeväggben refers to the bones that form the bony portion of the nasal septum, the structure that divides the nasal cavity into left and right sides. The primary bony components are the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, which forms the upper and posterior part of the septum, and the vomer, which forms the lower and posterior portion. The anterior portion of the septum is made mainly of cartilage (the septal cartilage), while the nasal bones and parts of the maxilla contribute to the anterior margins.

Anatomically, the bony septum helps define the medial wall of each nasal cavity and provides a framework for the overlying mucosa. The perpendicular plate of the ethmoid is the major superior component, and the vomer descends to meet it inferiorly. The septum is continuous with surrounding structures including the ethmoid labyrinth, palatine bones, and maxillary bones at its margins, and it articulates with these bones to form a stable central partition within the nose.

Developmentally, the nasal septum bones originate from neural crest–derived tissue and ossify early in life, with the anterior cartilage portion remaining flexible. Variation in length, angulation, and projection is common among individuals, and the exact contribution of the bony versus cartilaginous parts can differ.

Clinically, the nässkiljeväggben is relevant in conditions such as septal deviation or perforation, often following trauma or surgical procedures. Deviations can impact airflow and nasal resistance and are a common consideration in rhinoplasty and septoplasty. Imaging with CT or MRI can delineate the bony septum and its relationship to surrounding structures when pathology is suspected.
