Measuring systems, known in Estonian as mõõtesüsteemid, are standardized sets of units used to quantify physical properties such as length, mass, time, temperature, and electric current. They provide a common language for scientists, engineers, and everyday users, enabling accurate communication and comparison of measurements across disciplines and borders.

The most widely adopted system worldwide is the International System of Units (SI), derived from the metric system that traces its roots to the French Revolution. SI defines base units like the metre, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, and candela from which derived units are constructed. SI units are governed by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, ensuring uniformity and continual refinement through international revisions of the definitions, often tied to fundamental constants of nature.

Other prominent measuring systems include the United States customary units and the British imperial system, which are still used in various contexts within the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. These systems use units such as the foot, pound, and gallon. Although largely supplanted by SI in scientific contexts, they remain entrenched in certain industries and cultural practices.

In Estonia, the metric system was officially adopted in the 20th century, replacing older imperial measures. Today, education and industry operate primarily in SI units, while certain legacy practices, especially in construction or real estate, may still refer to older local units. The transition to universally accepted metrics facilitates international trade, scientific collaboration, and educational consistency.
