målestandard

The term målestandard refers to a measurement standard—the reference quantity, artifact, material, or documented method used to establish the magnitude and accuracy of measurements. In metrology, a målestandard anchors the calibration chain, allowing instruments to be compared and results to be traced to the SI.

Standards can be primary, secondary, or working. Primary standards define units via fundamental constants or perfect artifacts. Secondary standards are calibrated against primary standards. Working standards are used in routine laboratory work and are calibrated periodically. Standards may be artefacts, reference materials, or standardized procedures.

Traceability enables comparisons between laboratories and over time. Each measurement result is linked to a sequence of calibrations that culminate in a statement of uncertainty and a reference to the relevant standard. Calibration laboratories and quality systems rely on this chain.

International and national framework: The SI base units are defined by fixed values of fundamental constants, as maintained by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). National metrology institutes (NMIs) preserve national standards and provide calibration services. Organizations such as ISO and IEC develop standards that complement metrology, facilitating consistent measurement practices across industries.
