myxomyceten
Myxomycetes, commonly known as slime molds, are a fascinating group of organisms that blur the lines between fungi, protists, and even animals. They are not true fungi, nor are they plants or animals, but are classified as amoebozoa, a type of protist. Myxomycetes exist in a variety of forms throughout their life cycle. The most recognizable stage is the plasmodium, a large, multinucleate mass of cytoplasm that creeps along surfaces, engulfing bacteria, fungal spores, and other organic matter as food. This plasmodium can grow to impressive sizes, sometimes spanning several feet, and exhibits remarkable intelligence-like behavior, navigating mazes and finding optimal paths to food sources.
When environmental conditions become unfavorable, such as a lack of food or moisture, the plasmodium differentiates.
