Mykorhizayhteyksiä refers to mycorrhizal associations, a symbiotic relationship between fungi and plant roots. The term is derived from Greek words "mykes" meaning fungus and "rhiza" meaning root. In this mutualistic partnership, the fungus colonizes the root system of a host plant, either intracellularly or extracellularly. This association is crucial for the survival and growth of most terrestrial plants, as it significantly enhances nutrient and water uptake from the soil.

The fungal hyphae, which are microscopic thread-like structures, extend far beyond the plant's root hairs into the soil. This vastly increases the surface area available for absorption of essential nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, which are often immobile in the soil. In return for these nutrients and water, the plant provides the fungus with carbohydrates produced during photosynthesis.

There are several types of mycorrhizal associations, with the most common being ectomycorrhizae and endomycorrhizae (also known as arbuscular mycorrhizae). Ectomycorrhizae typically form a sheath around the root tips and penetrate the spaces between root cells, while endomycorrhizae penetrate the root cells themselves, forming specialized structures called arbuscules. These fungi play a vital role in ecosystem health, facilitating plant establishment, improving soil structure, and influencing plant community dynamics.
