Mutatsiooniliike refers to the different types of mutations that can occur in an organism's genetic material. These mutations are changes in the DNA sequence that can be inherited.

Point mutations are the most common type, involving a change in a single nucleotide. These can be substitutions, where one nucleotide is replaced by another, insertions, where a nucleotide is added, or deletions, where a nucleotide is removed. Insertions and deletions of nucleotides can lead to frameshift mutations, which alter the reading frame of the genetic code, resulting in a completely different protein sequence downstream of the mutation.

Chromosomal mutations involve larger-scale changes to the structure of chromosomes. These include deletions, where a segment of a chromosome is lost; duplications, where a segment of a chromosome is repeated; inversions, where a segment of a chromosome is reversed; and translocations, where a segment of one chromosome attaches to a different, non-homologous chromosome.

Mutations can also be classified by their effect on the organism. Somatic mutations occur in non-reproductive cells and are not passed on to offspring. Germline mutations occur in reproductive cells (sperm or egg) and can be inherited by future generations.

The causes of mutations, or mutagens, can be environmental factors such as radiation and certain chemicals, or they can arise spontaneously due to errors in DNA replication or repair processes. While mutations can be harmful, leading to diseases like cancer, they are also the fundamental source of genetic variation, driving evolution.
