muoner

"Muoner" is an informal or colloquial term occasionally used in particle physics contexts to refer to a muon, to an object or detector that produces or records muons, or more loosely to a person who works with muons. It is not a formal scientific designation and appears mainly in conversational or technical slang.

A muon is an elementary charged lepton similar to the electron but about 207 times more massive, with a rest mass of roughly 105.7 MeV/c^2 and a mean lifetime of about 2.2 microseconds. Muons carry electric charge (μ− or μ+) and participate in weak and electromagnetic interactions but not in the strong interaction. They decay predominantly to an electron and two neutrinos. Discovered in cosmic-ray experiments in the 1930s, muons play a prominent role in experimental and theoretical particle physics.

Muons are produced naturally in the atmosphere by cosmic-ray interactions and are also generated in accelerator facilities. They are detected by a variety of instruments including scintillators, drift chambers, and muon spectrometers. Precision muon measurements, such as the muon anomalous magnetic moment (g−2) experiments, provide sensitive tests of the Standard Model and probes for new physics. Practical applications include muon tomography for imaging dense structures and studies in condensed-matter physics using muon spin rotation.

Because "muoner" is informal, formal writing and publications typically use the standard term "muon."
