Muodkoimat is a Finnish term that translates to "shape memory" or "mold memory." It refers to the characteristic of certain materials to return to a pre-determined shape after being deformed. This phenomenon is most commonly associated with shape memory alloys (SMAs), but the concept can also be observed in some polymers and other materials.

The underlying principle of shape memory in SMAs involves a reversible phase transformation between two crystal structures: martensite and austenite. When the material is in its martensitic phase, it is more ductile and can be easily deformed. Upon heating above a specific transition temperature, the material transforms into its austenitic phase, which is its original, pre-determined shape. This transformation occurs due to the rearrangement of atoms within the crystal lattice. The temperature at which this transformation happens can be tailored during the manufacturing process of the alloy.

Muodkoimat has practical applications in various fields. In medicine, it is used for devices like stents, which are inserted in a compressed form and then expand to their original shape inside the body. In engineering, it is utilized in actuators, self-adjusting fasteners, and even in aerospace for deployable structures. The ability of these materials to "remember" and return to their original form makes them valuable for smart and adaptive technologies.
