Muljumistest is a term that refers to the process of extracting essential oils or fragrances from plant materials. This traditional method is particularly associated with certain types of flowers and herbs. The core principle involves using a solvent, often a type of fat or oil, to absorb the volatile aromatic compounds released by the plant material.

The process typically begins with fresh plant matter, such as petals or leaves, being spread in a thin layer on glass plates coated with a purified fat, known as a "chassis." These plates are then placed in a frame, forming a "mouleur." The chassis absorbs the fragrance from the plant material over a period of time, usually 24 to 72 hours. The depleted plant material is then removed and replaced with fresh material, a process repeated until the fat is fully saturated with the aromatic compounds. This saturated fat is called a "pomade."

The pomade, now holding the plant's essence, is then treated with alcohol. The alcohol dissolves the aromatic compounds from the fat. The mixture is then cooled, causing the fat to solidify and separate from the alcohol. The alcohol, which now contains the concentrated fragrance, is carefully decanted. This alcoholic solution is then left to evaporate, leaving behind the pure essential oil, also known as an "attar" or "absolue." Muljumistest is a labor-intensive method, often requiring significant amounts of plant material and skilled craftsmanship, and is primarily used for delicate flowers that do not withstand steam distillation well.
