Mucociliary is a term referring to the mucociliary escalator, a crucial defense mechanism in the respiratory system. It consists of two main components: mucus and cilia. Mucus, produced by goblet cells and submucosal glands in the airways, forms a sticky layer that traps inhaled particles such as dust, pathogens, and debris. Lining the surface of the respiratory epithelium are microscopic, hair-like structures called cilia.
