mtéteket

Mtéteket is a term used in speculative ethnography to describe a communal memory ritual practiced by communities in the Montara Archipelago. The practice combines storytelling, music, and ritual action to preserve and transmit collective histories.

Etymology: The word mtéteket comes from the Mté language, with scholarly debate about its exact components. Most analysts attribute mté to “memory” and ket to “binding” or “circle,” reflecting the ritual’s social function.

Description: The ritual is typically held during the annual solstice festival. Participants form a circle while elder storytellers recount episodes from community memory. Throughout the performance, participants contribute memory tokens—small carved discs or beads—that are placed into a central urn. The tokens are later returned, symbolizing the integration of personal recollections into the shared past.

History: The practice is traced to a historical migration in the region and appears in early travelogues from merchants and missionaries. It has persisted through colonial periods and modernization, though the form has varied with local circumstances.
