mormaer

The term "mormaer" was a Celtic title of nobility in medieval Scotland, roughly equivalent to an earl. These lords held significant territorial and administrative power, often ruling over large regions of what is now Scotland. The title appears to have originated in the Gaelic-speaking areas of the kingdom. Mormaers were instrumental in the governance of the kingdom, acting as regional administrators and military leaders for the king.
