Monosyytejä are a type of white blood cell, also known as leukocytes, that play a crucial role in the immune system. They are the largest type of white blood cell and are produced in the bone marrow. Monosyytejä circulate in the bloodstream for a period before migrating into tissues, where they differentiate into macrophages or dendritic cells.

These cells are characterized by their large, often kidney-shaped or horseshoe-shaped nucleus and abundant cytoplasm. Their primary function is to act as phagocytes, meaning they engulf and digest cellular debris, foreign substances, microbes, cancer cells, and anything else that does not have the type of proteins specific to the surface of healthy body cells. This process is known as phagocytosis.

Once monosyytejä enter tissues, they become macrophages. Macrophages are essential for initiating and regulating the immune response. They present antigens to other immune cells, such as T cells, thereby initiating an adaptive immune response. They also release cytokines, which are signaling molecules that help coordinate the immune system's activities and promote inflammation. In certain tissues, macrophages have specialized names, such as Kupffer cells in the liver or microglia in the brain.

The number of monosyytejä in the blood can fluctuate depending on the body's health status. An elevated count, known as monocytosis, can indicate a variety of conditions, including infections, inflammatory diseases, or certain types of cancer. Conversely, a low count, or monocytopenia, can make an individual more susceptible to infections.
