Molekylbindinger, also known as chemical bonds, are the forces that hold atoms together to form molecules or compounds. These forces arise from the electrostatic interactions between the electrons and nuclei of atoms. The primary goal of atoms in forming bonds is to achieve a more stable electron configuration, often resembling that of the noble gases, with a full outer electron shell.

There are several types of molecular bonds. Covalent bonds are formed when atoms share electrons. This sharing typically occurs between nonmetal atoms. The shared electrons are attracted to the nuclei of both atoms, holding them together. Ionic bonds, on the other hand, are formed by the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. The metal atom loses an electron to become a positively charged cation, and the nonmetal atom gains that electron to become a negatively charged anion. These oppositely charged ions then attract each other. Metallic bonds occur in metals, where a lattice of metal atoms is held together by a "sea" of delocalized electrons. These electrons are not associated with any single atom but can move freely throughout the metal, contributing to its conductivity.

In addition to these primary bond types, weaker intermolecular forces, such as hydrogen bonds, dipole-dipole interactions, and London dispersion forces, exist between molecules. While not as strong as intramolecular bonds, these forces play a crucial role in determining the physical properties of substances, such as their boiling points and melting points. Understanding molecular bonding is fundamental to comprehending the structure, properties, and reactivity of matter.
