Moduulaatioita, which translates to "modulations" in English, refers to the process of altering certain characteristics of a carrier wave, typically a periodic waveform such as a sine wave, with a modulating signal that carries information. This is a fundamental concept in telecommunications and signal processing. The carrier wave serves as a medium to transmit the information encoded in the modulating signal over a distance. Without modulation, directly transmitting raw information signals over long distances would be highly inefficient and impractical due to their low frequencies and susceptibility to interference.

The primary goal of modulation is to adapt the information signal to the properties of the transmission channel. Different types of modulation exist, each varying a specific parameter of the carrier wave. Amplitude modulation (AM) involves changing the amplitude of the carrier wave in proportion to the message signal. Frequency modulation (FM) alters the frequency of the carrier wave based on the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating signal. Phase modulation (PM) adjusts the phase of the carrier wave according to the message signal. Each modulation technique has its own advantages and disadvantages regarding bandwidth requirements, noise immunity, and complexity.

Modulation is essential for broadcasting radio and television signals, wireless communication systems like Wi-Fi and mobile phones, and many other forms of data transmission. The choice of modulation scheme depends on factors such as the desired data rate, the characteristics of the communication channel, and power efficiency considerations. The demodulation process is the inverse of modulation, where the original information signal is extracted from the modulated carrier wave at the receiving end.
