Modulatsioonitehnikateks refers to the various methods used to encode information onto a carrier signal. This process is fundamental to telecommunications, enabling the transmission of data over different media, such as radio waves, optical fibers, or electrical wires. The core idea is to vary one or more properties of the carrier wave – amplitude, frequency, or phase – in accordance with the modulating signal, which carries the information.

Amplitude modulation (AM) is one of the oldest and simplest techniques. In AM, the amplitude of the carrier wave is varied in proportion to the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating signal. While easy to implement, AM is susceptible to noise and interference, which can corrupt the amplitude variations and thus the transmitted information.

Frequency modulation (FM) involves changing the frequency of the carrier wave in accordance with the modulating signal. The amplitude of the carrier remains constant. FM offers better noise immunity compared to AM, which is why it is widely used for broadcasting high-fidelity audio, such as in FM radio.

Phase modulation (PM) alters the phase of the carrier wave based on the modulating signal. Similar to FM, PM is also robust against noise. In fact, FM can be seen as an indirect form of PM.

Digital modulation techniques, such as Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK), Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), and Phase Shift Keying (PSK), are used for transmitting digital data. These methods represent discrete states of the modulating signal by changing the amplitude, frequency, or phase of the carrier in distinct steps. More advanced techniques like Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) combine both amplitude and phase changes to achieve higher data rates. The choice of modulation technique depends on factors like desired data rate, bandwidth availability, noise conditions, and the complexity of the transmitter and receiver.
