Modulatorët, in the context of electronics and telecommunications, are devices or circuits that perform modulation. Modulation is the process of varying one or more properties of a periodic waveform, such as amplitude, frequency, or phase, with a signal that typically contains information. This information-carrying signal is called the modulating signal. The periodic waveform that is modified is called the carrier signal.

The primary purpose of modulation is to enable efficient transmission of information over a communication channel. For example, radio waves are used to transmit signals over long distances. However, voice signals cannot be directly transmitted efficiently over radio waves. By modulating a high-frequency carrier wave with the voice signal, the information can be encoded onto the carrier wave, which can then be broadcast and received by a radio receiver. At the receiver, a demodulator performs the reverse process, extracting the original information from the modulated carrier.

There are various types of modulation, including amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), and phase modulation (PM). Each type modifies a different property of the carrier wave. Amplitude modulation varies the amplitude of the carrier wave in proportion to the modulating signal. Frequency modulation varies the frequency of the carrier wave. Phase modulation varies the phase of the carrier wave. The choice of modulation technique depends on factors such as the desired bandwidth, noise immunity, and complexity of the system. Modulators are fundamental components in radio transmitters, wireless communication systems, and many other electronic devices.
