It refers to the carrier wave in a signal that is altered, or modulated, by another wave, known as the modulating wave or information signal. This process is fundamental to telecommunications and broadcasting, allowing information to be transmitted over distances.

The modulation wave, carrying the information such as voice or data, influences specific characteristics of the carrier wave. These characteristics can include its amplitude, frequency, or phase.
