Modulaatioaalto, often translated as modulation wave or carrier wave, is a fundamental concept in telecommunications and signal processing. It refers to a periodic waveform that is used to carry information by modifying one or more of its properties, such as amplitude, frequency, or phase. This process is known as modulation.

The primary purpose of a modulation wave is to enable the transmission of information over a communication channel. In its raw form, the information signal, such as audio or video, often exists at frequencies that are not suitable for efficient transmission or are prone to interference. By modulating a higher-frequency carrier wave with the information signal, the combined signal can be effectively transmitted over distances.
