Mnemotechnical, often shortened to mnemonic, refers to any learning technique that aids information retention or retrieval in the human memory. These techniques are primarily used for the memorization of lists, dates, facts, or other sequences of information. Mnemonics work by associating abstract or difficult-to-remember information with more easily recalled concepts, such as images, rhymes, or acronyms.

One common type of mnemonic is the acronym, where the first letters of a list of words are combined to form a new, memorable word. For example, ROY G. BIV is an acronym used to remember the colors of the rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. Another form is the acrostic, which involves creating a sentence or phrase where the first letter of each word corresponds to an item that needs to be remembered. A classic example is "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles" for the planets in order from the sun.

Visual mnemonics, such as the method of loci (or memory palace), involve associating items to be remembered with specific locations in a familiar mental space. By mentally walking through this space, one can recall the associated items. Rhymes and songs are also powerful mnemonic devices, as the rhythm and melody can make information more engaging and easier to recall. The effectiveness of mnemonics lies in their ability to transform abstract data into more concrete, imaginative, or structured forms that are better suited for long-term memory storage and retrieval.
