If the path consists of multiple non-existent directory names, mkdir by default will only create the final directory in the sequence, resulting in an error if any parent directories are missing. This means that if you try to create a directory structure like /home/user/new/subfolder, and neither "new" nor "subfolder" exist, the -p flag will create both "new" and then "subfolder" within it.
