Mitokondriaalisista refers to mitochondria, often called the "powerhouses" of the cell. These organelles are present in nearly all eukaryotic cells and are responsible for generating most of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), used as a source of chemical energy. Mitochondria have a unique structure, enclosed by two membranes: an outer membrane and a folded inner membrane. The folds of the inner membrane are called cristae, and they significantly increase the surface area for ATP synthesis.

The process of generating ATP within mitochondria is known as cellular respiration. This complex process involves several stages, including the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation. Mitochondria also contain their own circular DNA, separate from the nuclear DNA, and ribosomes, allowing them to synthesize some of their own proteins. This genetic material is inherited maternally, meaning it comes solely from the egg cell during fertilization.

Beyond energy production, mitochondria play crucial roles in various cellular processes, including cell signaling, differentiation, cell death (apoptosis), and the regulation of the cell cycle. Dysfunctions in mitochondrial activity are linked to a wide range of diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic diseases, and aging. Research into mitochondria continues to be a significant area in biology and medicine.
