Militaarnõukogu, also known as the Military Council, was a political body established in the Soviet Union during the period of the New Economic Policy (NEP) and the early years of the Soviet Union. It was created in 1921 as a response to the Kronstadt Rebellion, which highlighted the need for a more centralized and disciplined military leadership. The Militaarnõukogu was initially composed of representatives from the Red Army, the Navy, and the Cheka (the secret police), and it played a crucial role in maintaining order and stability within the Soviet state.

The council was responsible for overseeing the military's political and organizational affairs, ensuring that the military remained loyal to the Communist Party and the Soviet government. It also played a significant role in the development of the Soviet military, including the establishment of the Red Army's organizational structure and the implementation of military conscription. The Militaarnõukogu was dissolved in 1934 as part of a broader effort to centralize power within the Soviet government and eliminate what was seen as unnecessary bureaucracy. Its functions were largely absorbed by the newly created People's Commissariat for Defense.
