Mikrotopografi, or microtopography, denotes the fine-scale variations in the relief of a surface or landscape. It concerns features typically smaller than a few millimeters, often ranging from micrometers to millimeters, depending on the context. Microtopography shapes physical and ecological processes by determining how water, light, heat, and organisms interact with a surface or terrain.

In geomorphology and soil science, microtopography refers to the small relief of the soil surface, including ridges, depressions, and roughness elements that influence infiltration, drainage, evaporation, and seedling establishment. In materials science and engineering, microtopography describes the texture of a manufactured or worn surface, including asperities, pits, and grooves produced by machining, wear, or corrosion, which affects friction, wear resistance, and coating adhesion. In biology, the microtopography of substrates or tissues can govern cell adhesion, spreading, and differentiation.

Measurement and characterization rely on profilometry, optical and laser scanning, interferometry, and microscopy techniques such as atomic force microscopy, confocal microscopy, or scanning electron microscopy with 3D reconstruction. Common descriptors include roughness metrics such as Ra and Rz, texture direction, and spatial wavelength, all of which are scale-dependent.
