Mikroskoopide is the Estonian word for microscopes. Microscopes are optical instruments used to view objects that are too small to be seen by the naked eye. They work by using lenses to magnify an image of a specimen, making it appear larger and more detailed.

There are several types of microscopes, each with its own advantages and applications. The most common type is the optical microscope, which uses visible light to illuminate and magnify the specimen. Within optical microscopy, there are further classifications such as compound microscopes, which use multiple lenses, and simple microscopes, which use a single lens. Light microscopes typically offer magnifications up to around 1000x.

Electron microscopes are a more powerful type of microscope that use a beam of electrons instead of light to create an image. This allows for much higher magnifications and resolutions, enabling the visualization of extremely small structures like viruses and atoms. Transmission electron microscopes (TEM) pass electrons through a thin specimen, while scanning electron microscopes (SEM) scan the surface of a specimen with electrons to create a 3D image.

The invention of the microscope, attributed to early Dutch spectacle makers like Zacharias Janssen and Hans Lippershey in the late 16th century, revolutionized the study of biology and medicine. Robert Hooke's observations of cork cells, famously documented in his book "Micrographia," were among the first significant uses of a microscope. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek later improved microscope design and was the first to observe microorganisms, which he called "animalcules." Today, microscopes are indispensable tools in research, education, industry, and healthcare, facilitating discoveries and advancements across numerous scientific fields.
