Mikrometeoroidien, a German term, refers to micrometeoroids. These are tiny particles of matter from space that enter Earth's atmosphere. They are significantly smaller than meteoroids, typically ranging in size from dust grains to very small pebbles, often less than a millimeter in diameter. Despite their minuscule size, they are ubiquitous in the solar system.

These particles originate from a variety of celestial bodies, including comets and asteroids. As comets orbit the sun, they shed dust and ice, creating trails of debris. Asteroids, through collisions and fragmentation, also contribute to the population of micrometeoroids. When Earth passes through these debris fields, these small particles are captured by its gravity and enter the atmosphere.

Upon entering the atmosphere at high speeds, micrometeoroids experience intense friction. This friction causes them to heat up rapidly and often vaporize completely before reaching the Earth's surface. The vaporized material then condenses into tiny solid particles, known as cosmic dust. These particles eventually settle onto the Earth's surface, contributing a small but constant influx of extraterrestrial material to our planet. Scientists study these particles to gain insights into the composition and evolution of the solar system.
