Midas refers to King Midas of Phrygia, a legendary figure from Greek mythology. He is most famously known for his avaricious wish granted by the god Dionysus: that everything he touched would turn to gold. Initially delighted with his newfound ability, Midas soon discovered the terrible consequences of his curse. He was unable to eat, drink, or embrace his loved ones without transforming them into the precious metal. The most poignant part of the myth involves his daughter, whom he accidentally turned into a golden statue.

Distraught by the tragic outcome of his greed, Midas begged Dionysus to revoke the golden touch. The god instructed him to wash in the river Pactolus, where the Midas's golden power was washed away into the river, leaving behind the river's rich gold deposits. Midas is also associated with another myth where he judged a musical contest between Apollo and Pan, siding with Pan. As a punishment, Apollo bestowed upon him the ears of a donkey, which Midas tried to hide. He eventually confided his secret to a hole in the ground, which then spread the rumor. The story of Midas serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of greed and the importance of wisdom over material wealth.
