Microphyllous refers to a type of leaf that is small and simple, typically possessing a single, unbranched vein. This leaf morphology is a characteristic feature of some of the earliest vascular plants, such as lycophytes. Microphylls are considered to be the most primitive type of vascular plant leaf.

The evolutionary development of microphylls is believed to have involved the outgrowth of small projections from the stem, which gradually developed vascular tissue. Unlike megaphylls, which are thought to have evolved from flattened branches, microphylls are not considered to be modified stems or leaves in the same way. Their simpler structure and single vein distinguish them significantly from the more complex megaphyllous leaves found in most modern plants, including ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms.

The presence of microphylls is a key diagnostic feature used in the classification of vascular plants. Plants exhibiting this leaf type, like clubmosses and spikemosses, belong to the division Lycopodiophyta. The small size and simple venation of microphylls are often associated with adaptations to drier environments or as an early stage in the evolution of more complex leaf structures.
