Methyl mercaptan, also known as methanethiol, is an organosulfur compound with the chemical formula CH3SH. It is a colorless gas with a strong, unpleasant odor resembling that of rotten eggs or garlic. This distinctive smell is detectable by humans at very low concentrations.

Methyl mercaptan occurs naturally in the environment and is produced by the decomposition of organic matter, particularly by certain bacteria. It is also found in volcanic gases and crude oil. Industrially, it is synthesized by reacting methanol with hydrogen sulfide.

The compound has several applications. It is used as a precursor in the synthesis of other chemicals, such as methionine, an essential amino acid used in animal feed. It is also employed as a warning agent to detect leaks in natural gas and propane, as these fuels are naturally odorless. Due to its potent odor, even small leaks can be quickly identified.

While its smell is offensive, methyl mercaptan is not acutely toxic in the concentrations typically encountered as an odorant. However, at much higher concentrations, it can be harmful. Inhalation can cause respiratory irritation, headaches, and nausea. Environmental regulations often limit its release into the atmosphere due to its odor pollution potential.
