Methanal, also called formaldehyde (systematic name: methanal), is the simplest aldehyde with the chemical formula CH2O. It is a colorless gas at room temperature with a pungent odor. It is miscible with water and many organic solvents. In aqueous solution it forms methanediol (formalin) and tends to polymerize to polyoxymethylene unless stabilized (for example by methanol).

Industrial production is primarily by catalytic oxidation of methanol with air over a silver catalyst at elevated temperature, yielding formaldehyde and water. Small amounts are formed in combustion processes; trace amounts occur naturally in some living organisms.

Formaldehyde is a key precursor in the manufacture of resins such as urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins, which are used in wood products, coatings, textiles, and adhesives. It is also used in the production of plastics, certain detergents, and disinfectants. Concentrated solutions, known as formalin, are widely used as a fixation and preservation agent in biology and histology.

Safety and environmental aspects: Formaldehyde is toxic and an irritant; it is classified as a human carcinogen by several authorities. Exposure can irritate the eyes, nose, and respiratory tract. It can off-gas from solutions and resins, so occupational exposure limits and proper ventilation are important. Handling typically requires adequate engineering controls, personal protective equipment, and adherence to regulatory guidelines. Environmental releases are regulated due to its toxicity and potential ecological effects.
