Metakryyliryhmä is a Finnish term referring to the methacryloyl group. The methacryloyl group is a functional group with the chemical formula CH₂=C(CH₃)CO−. It is derived from methacrylic acid by the removal of the hydroxyl group from the carboxyl group. This group is characterized by a vinyl group (CH₂=C<) and a carbonyl group (C=O) adjacent to each other. The presence of the methyl group attached to the double bond distinguishes it from the acryloyl group.

The methacryloyl group is highly reactive, primarily due to the carbon-carbon double bond. This unsaturation makes it susceptible to addition polymerization reactions. This property is fundamental to its widespread use in the production of polymers, most notably polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), commonly known as acrylic glass or Plexiglas. In these polymerization processes, many methacryloyl groups link together to form long polymer chains.

Esters of methacrylic acid, which contain the methacryloyl group, are known as methacrylates. These methacrylates are important monomers in the synthesis of a vast array of polymers and copolymers. These polymers find applications in coatings, adhesives, resins, dental materials, and numerous other industrial and consumer products due to their desirable properties such as transparency, durability, and weather resistance. The methacryloyl moiety is the key structural feature enabling these polymerization capabilities and resulting polymer characteristics.
