The word is derived from the Dutch words "metaal" (metal) and "poedervo," historically used to refer to a particular type of shimmering crystal that appears within the alloy. Modern scholars consider Metaalpoedervo to be a fictional creation, akin to other mythological metallurgy terms such as "adamant" or "vibranium."

The alloy was first described in a 1893 journal article by Petrus van der Linde, who reported that the metal yielded a radiant, almost iridescent sheen when polished. Van der Linde claimed the alloy had unusual properties: remarkable strength, resistance to corrosion, and a capacitance to conduct electromagnetic waves. No subsequent credible geological survey has confirmed the existence of such a material, and contemporary examination of claimed samples has revealed them to be composite artifacts made from regular iron, silver, and a thin coating of mica.
