Mesotelioepiteeliä, known in English as mesothelial cells, are a type of squamous epithelial cell that form the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a serous membrane that lines the internal organs and body cavities of the body. Specifically, it forms the visceral pleura, which covers the lungs, the parietal pleura, which lines the thoracic cavity, the visceral peritoneum, which covers abdominal organs, and the parietal peritoneum, which lines the abdominal cavity. It also forms the epicardium, which covers the heart, and the tunica vaginalis, which covers the testes.

These cells are characterized by their flattened shape and their ability to secrete a serous fluid. This fluid acts as a lubricant, reducing friction between opposing surfaces as organs move within the body cavities. For example, the pleural fluid allows the lungs to expand and contract smoothly during respiration, and the peritoneal fluid facilitates the movement of abdominal organs during digestion.

Mesothelial cells originate from the mesoderm during embryonic development. They play a role in wound healing and the immune response within the serous cavities. In certain pathological conditions, such as mesothelioma, these cells can undergo malignant transformation.
