Mesophylljében is a term used in biology, specifically within the study of plant anatomy. It refers to the inner tissue of a leaf, situated between the upper and lower epidermis. This layer is crucial for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy.

The mesophyll tissue is typically divided into two distinct types: the palisade mesophyll and the spongy mesophyll. The palisade mesophyll consists of elongated, column-shaped cells that are densely packed and located directly beneath the upper epidermis. These cells are rich in chloroplasts, the organelles responsible for photosynthesis, and are ideally positioned to capture sunlight.

Below the palisade mesophyll is the spongy mesophyll. This layer is composed of irregularly shaped cells with large air spaces between them. These air spaces facilitate the diffusion of gases, such as carbon dioxide and oxygen, throughout the leaf. This gas exchange is essential for both photosynthesis and respiration. The spongy mesophyll also contains chloroplasts, though generally fewer than the palisade mesophyll. The arrangement of mesophyll cells, with their specialized structures and proximity to vascular tissues (veins), ensures efficient light absorption and gas exchange, optimizing the plant's ability to produce food.
