Menthylation is a chemical reaction that involves the addition of a menthyl group to a molecule. A menthyl group is a derivative of menthol, a cyclic terpene alcohol known for its minty aroma and cooling sensation. The menthyl group, typically a menthyl ester or ether, is often employed as a chiral auxiliary in asymmetric synthesis.

In asymmetric synthesis, chiral auxiliaries are temporary additions to a molecule that guide a chemical reaction to selectively produce one enantiomer over another. The menthyl group, being chiral, can create a sterically hindered environment around the reactive center of the molecule. This steric bulk influences the approach of reagents, favoring the formation of a specific stereoisomer.
