Menins, also known as meninges, are the protective membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord in vertebrates. There are three layers of meninges, which are, from outermost to innermost: the dura mater, the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater. These layers work together to provide mechanical protection, support, and nourishment to the central nervous system.

The dura mater is the thickest and outermost layer. It is a tough, fibrous membrane that forms a protective sac around the brain and spinal cord. In the skull, it adheres to the bone, while in the vertebral column, it is separated from the vertebrae by the epidural space, which contains adipose tissue.

Beneath the dura mater is the arachnoid mater. This is a thin, web-like membrane. The space between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater is called the subarachnoid space. This space is filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which acts as a shock absorber and helps to circulate nutrients and remove waste products.

The innermost layer is the pia mater. It is a delicate, highly vascularized membrane that closely adheres to the surface of the brain and spinal cord, following all its intricate folds and convolutions. Blood vessels that nourish the central nervous system run within this layer. The collective function of the meninges is crucial for maintaining the integrity and health of the brain and spinal cord.
